Overview

Although President Biden has been in office for less than two and a half years, the race to replace him in 2024 has already begun. Former President Donald Trump and former South Carolina Governor and ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley have formally declared that they will be candidates, and several others, including former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, are expected to make similar announcements. Many believe that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will be joining all of them as they prepare to gather for the first Republican Presidential Debate in about four months in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Washington is still digesting the outcome of the 2022 Midterm election, which resulted in not only a divided Congress, but a divided Republican Party. Increasingly, these divisions involve questions about the proper role that the US should play in the world. Professor Sracic will provide an update on the current state of American politics, focusing on the impact that the recent midterm elections and the upcoming presidential contest will have on the US as a global leader.
