Overview

Join us at the TUJ Parliament for a screening of the documentary Birthgap - Childless World, followed by a conversation with the film director Stephen J Shaw. Shocked by data on declining birth rates in Europe and Japan, Stephen embarked on a 24-country journey in order to understand the causes of this phenomenon. Along the way, he came face-to-face with the economic, social and individual consequences of childlessness and declining birth rates. At a time where Japan faces an uncertain future due to population decline, this thought-provoking documentary combines deeply personal stories with never-seen-before demographic data to reveal the surprising reality of what has been happening across the globe.

Speaker's biography:

Stephen J Shaw is a data scientist, demographer and a documentary Filmmaker. Originally from the UK, he lived and studied in France and the US before settling in Tokyo. He holds an MBA from the Institut Supérieur de Gestion in Paris and is currently pursuing a degree in Data Science at the Harvard Extension School. In addition to writing and directing the documentary Birthgap - Childless World, he is the founder of Birthgap.org, a social impact enterprise dedicated to education and research into the phenomenon of birth rate decline.
