The South China Sea is Asia's focal point of contention. What are the interests and concerns of Japan's military leaders, and what has changed in Japan's activities in the area over the past few years? What are the possible scenarios, and how is Japan preparing for each of them? And, what do these changes mean for the U.S., and the balance in the U.S.-Japan alliance? Join John Bradford, seasoned active participant, academic observer, and author on military matters in the South China Sea.

John Bradford is Senior Fellow in the Maritime Security Program at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of Commander, with assignments including the 7th Fleet Maritime Headquarters and Japan's Office of the Secretary of Defense-Policy. He has published widely on Indo-Pacific maritime issues and security cooperation. He holds an MS in Strategic Studies from RSIS, and a B.A. from Cornell University.
Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy and the director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.
