Rethinking Fukushima: Disruptions and Continuities of the Disaster

This conference aims to bring up to date knowledge in humanities and social sciences on the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster on occasion of its 10th anniversary. By discussing the consequences of this accident, we will focus on what this crisis has changed locally and globally in the so-called "post-Fukushima" society.

On March 11, 2011, Japan suffered a very serious accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and a tsunami. Ten years later, however, the disaster is not history yet; rather its after-effects are still visible. While the dismantling of the damaged reactors appears to be more and more complex, the return of residents to the contaminated zone and the selection of the site meant become radioactive waste repository ignite controversies constantly. Moreover, the Japanese government has always been a promoter of nuclear energy.

If the name of Fukushima is known to all the world because of this serious accident, what have we learned from it? Over the past decade, researchers in humanities and social sciences have been seeking to understand the effects of the Fukushima nuclear disaster, not only within Japan, but also in other nuclear power countries and on the international community. This conference is intended to draw on these works in order to rethink the social impact of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, by questioning the type of rupture it has created, or not, in the national and global context. With the participation of historians, sociologists, philosophers and anthropologists working on Fukushima or other nuclear accidents, this academic event will strive to elaborate a more global reflection around two themes: "Acting in the post-Fukushima society" and "Managing nuclear power after a disaster"
