We hope you can join us for the panel on Europe and East Asia on 16 March 2021 at 17:00 Tokyo Time (08:00 London, 09:00 Brussels).
Since the demise of the European Asian empires in the 1940s/50s, East Asia, though an important economic partner, has been peripheral in European security thinking.
In recent years, a combination of factors -- economic, human rights, security concerns -- have led more Europeans to see China as a concern, or for some a threat, and also to focus on the geopolitics of the region as a whole. At the same time, others still perceive the PRC as mostly an economic opportunity and for some a strategic partner. Other regions of Asia are also gradually being seen in Europe as relevant to security and political issues.
So far the impact of the EU and of individual European states on East Asia's strategic environment has been minimal. Our panel will address the question of the present and future of European political-military activities in the region, and what it would mean for Japan, China, other Asian nations, and the United States.
Panelists:
Valérie Niquet, Senior Research Fellow and Head of Asia Program, Fondation pour la recherche stratégique and Senior Fellow, Japan Institute of International Affair
Brad Glosserman, Visiting Professor at the Center for Rule-making Strategies, Tama University. He is also a Senior Adviser at Pacific Forum.
