[SSJ: 6642] Navigating Fukushima - Lessons from Chernobyl

From: Tracy Timmons-Gray
Date: 2011/04/27

Dear SSJ Forum members,

We would like to share with you a new NBR interview with Dr. Scott Davis about the mechanics of the crisis in Fukushima and how it compares to Chernobyl.

Dr. Davis is an expert on the measurement and the effects of radiation exposure, and for more than ten years, has overseen two major research projects investigating the effects of radiation exposure on human health--one at the Chernobyl Power Station and the other at the Hanford Nuclear Site in eastern Washington State.

In this interview, Dr. Davis discusses what the potential health consequences are for those who live near the Fukushima nuclear plant, what preventive and protective measures are generally taken in occupational settings that feature radiation, and how the findings of the Chernobyl disaster can inform Japan's management of the situation in Fukushima.
