41st INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON EASTERN STUDIES Tokyo May 10th,11th; Kyoto May
18th, 1996

This conference has been held annually since 1956, contributing much toward the
development of international understanding through the medium of scholarship in
its capacity as the regular international conference on Asian studies in Japan
and has thus promoted the exchange of knowledge among foreign and Japanese
specialists. Last year as many as 504 researchers and scholars from 30 countries
participated in the 40th Conference.
In organizing the 41st Conference, the Program Committee earnestly hopes that as
in the past many scholars who are presently in Japan will be interested in
attending the Conference and invites papers on research in progress.

The Tokyo Sessions of the Conference will be divided into 1) Special Lectures,
2)Sectional Meetings and 3) Seminars. Sectional Meetings will deal with China,
India, Japan, Korea and other areas of Asia, and as disciplines, language,
literature, history, philosophy, thought, religion, arts, archaeology,
sociology, international relations, cultural anthropology, ethnology, etc.
Seminars will deal with Japanese literature, Japanese history and international
relations in modern East Asia. The Kansai session will be organized separately,
inviting guest speakers. There will be no paper sessions at the Kansai Session.

Papers
If you wish to present a paper at the Tokyo session, contact the ICES Program
Committee as soon as possible. The theme of a report is entirely left to your
option so long as it is of a scientific nature. Talks may be in Japanese or
English.
