About the Film

1923 (South Korea, 2024, 116 min.) is the first South Korean documentary to confront directly the long-suppressed massacre of Koreans in the immediate aftermath of the Great Kanto Earthquake of September 1, 1923. Drawing on extensive research and newly uncovered materials from Japan, Korea, and the West, the film asks how rumors spread in the chaos of disaster -- and why ordinary citizens became perpetrators of mass violence.

More than one hundred years on, these events remain largely absent from official Japanese historical narratives. 1923 illuminates the structures of discrimination, the demonization of immigrants, and the power arrangements that sustain them. The parallels with our own era -- marked by the viral spread of disinformation, hatred, and state-sanctioned violence--are striking. This film is not merely a historical record; it challenges us to reflect on how we live in our communities today.

Narrated by acclaimed actor Kim Eui-sung (12.12: The Day). Featuring interviews with, among others, former Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.

『1923』（韓国、2024年、116分）は、1923年9月1日の関東大震災直後に起きた朝鮮人虐殺という、長年にわたり隠蔽されてきた事件に正面から向き合った、韓国初のドキュメンタリーです。日韓および欧米での膨大な取材と新資料の検証を通じて、なぜ混乱の中でデマが拡散し、なぜ普通の市民が暴力的な「自警団」となったのかを問い直します。

100年以上が経過した今も、この事実は公式な歴史叙述においてほとんど語られていません。本作は、差別の構造、移民の「悪魔化」、そしてそれを生み出した権力の闇を照らし出します。SNSによるデマの拡散と他者への不寛容が世界的に広がる現代は、100年前と驚くほど似ています。単なる歴史の記録にとどまらず、私たちが今この社会でどう生きるべきかを問いかける作品です。

ナレーション：キム・ウィソン（映画『ソウルの春』ほか）。鳩山由紀夫元首相をはじめ多くの識者が出演。
