July 18 Free Lecture at Lakeland University Japan: North Asian Geopolitics

From: Roger Grabowski <grabowski@japan.lakeland.edu>
Date: 2024/07/04

"Geopolitics in North Asia - the Deepening Challenge of Relations Between Japan, China and the Two Koreas", presented by Philip Turner

This lecture (in English) will be held Thursday, July 18 at 7:00 at Lakeland University in Ryogoku, Tokyo. It will also be streamed via Zoom.

North Asia has long been a tough neighbourhood.  Invasion by European and the Japanese empires ended centuries of Chinese domination, and led to civil war and revolution in China, defeat for Japan, and a brutal and still unresolved war that split the historic kingdom of Korea into two. Despite rising wealth and shared prosperity, North Asia today remains deeply riven by ideology, military confrontation, territorial disputes and mutual distrust. Unlike southeast Asia, north Asia has no security structure for dealing with conflicts.  Yet the region has not seen a major cross-border conflict since the 1960s.  How are the region's leaders managing these issues in 2024?  Is conflict inevitable or will we see a continuation of the uneasy stability that has prevailed for more than half a century?

Philip Turner was the New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and to the Democratic People`s Republic of Korea (North Korea) from 2018 to 2023. Previous to that he was a diplomat for New Zealand in Tokyo, Brussels and Wellington, then spent 18 years in senior leadership roles with New Zealand's largest company, Fonterra Cooperative Group.
