abstract:
Our workshop explores the lived experiences of international migrants in host countries, focusing on how they employ identity reconstruction not just as coping mechanisms but as survival strategies in the face of discrimination and existential threats. Moving from one country to another involves significant efforts to gain social acce ptance in new societies and foster a sense of belonging.
Marginalized groups, such as Vietnamese and Afghan individuals in Japan or Vietnamese ethnic women in China, often find themselves in situations questioning their self-worth, making them more susceptible to identity crises. Whether adapting their self-identification based on social contexts, distancing themselves from their ethnic group, or developing complex perceptions of home and belonging, these strategies aim not only for social acceptance but also to reclaim a sense of agency.
