This Japan Zoominar will discuss the book "History of Innovative Entrepreneurs in Japan" by Takeo Kikkawa. Following a short video message from Kikkawa, Robert Feldman and Kenji Kushida will lead a discussion on how entrepreneurship has long been a central feature of innovation in Japan and how it has evolved over time.

Robert Feldman is a Senior Advisor at Morgan Stanley MUFG Securities, where he has worked since 1998. In addition to his Morgan Stanley work, he became an Outside Director at Tokio Marine Holdings in June 2023. From 2017-22, he was a professor in the Tokyo University of Science Management of Technology program, and from 2000-2020, he was a commentator on Japan's nightly business program, World Business Satellite. He has served on the US-Japan Friendship Commission. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and BAs in Economics and in Japanese Studies from Yale. He has written nine books in Japanese and two in English, and translated three from Japanese to English.
 
Kenji Kushida is Senior Fellow at the Asia Program in the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP) directing Japan research and programming themed "Innovative Japan, Global Japan" and he leads the Japan-Silicon Valley Innovation Initiative@Carnegie. He is also Senior Advisor to global advisory firm Macro Advisory Partners, an International Research Fellow at the Canon Institute for Global Studies (CIGS) and nonresident senior fellow at the Tokyo Institute for Policy Studies (TIPS). He holds a PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, an MA in East Asian studies and BAs in economics and East Asian studies, all from Stanford University. 

Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the Director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.
