These will all be published as part of Japan Review 38, scheduled for December 2023. This bumper volume of the journal will also include:

  • Our first Special Section, with an introduction and three articles examining "Auxiliaries of Empire: Children, Foot Soldiers, and Settlers in Japanese Imperial History",
  • A retrospective article offering a new perspective on the life and career of Yanagita Kunio,
  • Our first Review Essay looking at three books recently published on intelligence and security in Japan,
  • And a bumper crop of 22 book reviews.


Japan Review solicits manuscripts relating to all aspects of Japan, past and present, and is open to submissions from across the humanities, social sciences, and beyond.
Subjects, methods and approaches of particular significance may be examined as Special Issues of the journal or as Special Sections within it.
