Meiji Gakuin is a private university based on Christian principles, founded in 1863. It has two campuses, in Shirokane, Tokyo, and in Totsuka, Yokohama. The Department of Global and Transcultural Studies is based at the Totsuka campus. It was founded in 2011 and is the only department in the university that conducts classes entirely in English.
A vacancy has arisen for an adjunct lecturer to teach East Asian Politics and Society next spring at GTS. This is an upper-division course and involves teaching one 90-minute class a week, in English, to a mixed class of Meiji Gakuin and overseas exchange students. The spring semester starts on April 1, 2024 and teaching ends on or before July 27, 2024. The day and time-slot of the class is negotiable within the constraints of the overall timetable.

This appointment is initially for one semester only, but there may be a possibility of renewal in AY2025.

We recognize that this is an extremely broad subject and the successful candidate will naturally tend to focus on their particular area of expertise. However, we do expect some coverage of politics and society in Japan, China, North and South Korea, and Taiwan. Other areas, such as Mongolia and the Russian Far East, may also be included, but we view Southeast Asia as a separate entity. Please note that as well as numerous Japanese students, our department also has quite a few students from China (including some from Hong Kong), South Korea, and Taiwan, and we have many American and European exchange students. This should give the successful candidate exciting opportunities for interactive classes making use of the varying backgrounds of the students.

We would be willing to consider applications from candidates who also consider themselves qualified to teach lower-division course we are also currently advertising, Introduction to Area Studies. The two courses could be taught back-to-back on a single day.

Teaching one 90-minute class a week for 15 weeks, with attendant class preparation, grading etc. Native-speaker or near-native-speaker English.
