Japan Zoominar @ UC San Diego: "The Leading Edge of Aging: Lessons from Japan," with Sarah Lubman

The stark statistics that measure Japan's shrinking, aging population don't capture how profoundly the demographic shift is reshaping the country. The ripple effects of more old people and fewer young people are altering every aspect of Japan, from its physical appearances to its social policies, from business strategy to the labor market, from public spaces to private homes. Japan's path foreshadows what's coming in many areas of the world. Meeting the challenge won't be easy, but the future isn't necessarily a straight downhill slide. Japan's experience, with its characteristic attention to detail and design, suggests extreme aging may inspire an age of innovation.

Sarah Lubman is a veteran journalist and former corporate communications executive with a deep background in Japan. She has advised a number of Japanese companies and ran SoftBank Group's communications. Sarah has an MA in Japanese literature from UCLA and a BA in Japanese and Religious Studies from UC Berkeley

Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy and the director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.
