How do we interpret Hello Kitty's fandom from Tokyo to Honolulu to Los
Angeles to Sao Paolo in the wake of pink globalization? This Japan
Zoominar looks at "pink globalization" - the spread of goods and images
labeled cute (kawaii) from Japan to other parts of the industrial world.
"Pink globalization" connects Japan's overseas market expansion,
distribution and marketing of Japanese products, and the rise of Japan's
national cool. What have been the larger impacts over time of such
rambling cuteness?
Guest Speaker:
Christine R. Yano is a professor of Anthropology at the University of Hawaii, who conducts
research on Japan and Japanese Americans with a focus on popular
culture. She curated a major exhibition at the Japanese American
National Museum in Los Angeles, "Hello! Exploring the Supercute World of
Hello Kitty," which ran from 2014 to 2015, and continues to travel.
Moderator:
Ellis Krauss is a leading expert on Japanese politics and U.S.-Japan
relations. His research interests include Japan and the U.S. in Asia,
Japanese foreign policy, domestic politics in Japan and the Japanese
mass media. Krauss is a professor emeritus of Japanese politics and
policymaking at the School of Global Policy and Strategy. In 2019,
Brookings Institution Press published his co-authored book "Reluctant
Warriors: Germany, Japan, and Their U.S. Alliance Dilemma."
We hope to see you there!
