Dear all,

This week, Japan Zoominar @ UC San Diego hosts "Japan's
Power and Influence in the Newly Emerging World Order" with Robert
Madsen. Please join us for this conversation with Ulrike Schaede, here:
Wednesday, April 7, 2021, 8:30am-9:30am Japan Time (JST)
Tuesday, April 6, 2021, 4:30pm-5:30pm Pacific (PDT)

The
1945-2015 geopolitical order has come unglued. The rise of China and
the increasing unreliability of the United States have raised serious
questions about Japan's national security and international influence.
While attention has focused primarily on Tokyo's relations with Beijing
and the capitals of East and Southeast Asia, there are more fundamental
problems around the world that will disproportionately affect Japan's
ability to exert influence abroad. Join us to discuss what these
tectonic shifts mean for the future of Japan in the region and around
the globe.

Guest Speaker:
Robert Madsen, senior economist at
David Hale Global Economics, is an expert on global politics, economics,
and finance. He advises companies, government agencies, investment
groups, and foundations. Before joining the Hale group, he served for a
decade on the Executive Council at Unison Capital, a Japanese private
equity fund, was a limited partner in the Robert M. Bass Group in its
Japanese investments, and served as Asia Strategist at Soros Private
Funds Management. For fifteen years he wrote the Economist Intelligence
Unit's (EIU) Japan Country Reports and contributed to that company's
analysis of China, broader East Asia, and the world. From 2004 to 2015
he was a Senior Fellow at MIT's Center for International Studies, and
before that he was a Fellow at Stanford University's Asia-Pacific
Research Center. Robert studied East Asian Languages and Civilizations
at Harvard University, and has earned a master's degree as a Rhodes
Scholar at Oxford University, and a law degree at Stanford. He is fluent
in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.

Moderator:
Ulrike Schaede
is Professor of Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the Director
of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies,
including business culture, change management, and business
organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes
how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the
changing global competition.

We hope to see you there!

Coming up the following Wednesday (JST):
