European Institute of Japanese Studies
Academy Seminars presents:

Japan's Investment Recovery and the Next Wave of Globalization

Martin Schulz
Senior Research Fellow, Fujitsu Research Institute

Thursday, September 20, 2012
The Alfred Nobel Auditorium,
Embassy of Sweden

Overview:
Japan’s lost decades have been a quite busy time at the
corporate side of the economy. Restructuring and
cost-cutting have brought down prices to competitive
levels, manufacturing has turned from bulky to lean,
and Japan’s services have added productivity to
unrivaled quality. Unfortunately, the long workout also
resulted in persistent deflation, lacking innovation,
and missed globalization opportunities. As a result,
hope for a sustainable recovery has been trashed time
and again – until former global stars are now being
taken over by their Asian peers.
Fortunately, companies have almost finished their long
restructuring cycle; corporate cash reserves are at
peak levels, overseas investment is flowing at an
unprecedented rate, and the huge service sector has
turned into the country’s engine of growth. What’s
missing is a sustainable recovery of investment into
innovation, and effective strategies that make use of
Japan’s abundant technology in today’s growth markets.
After a review of trends, we will discuss when and how
such a recovery will materialize.

About the speaker:
Dr. Martin Schulz is a Senior Research Fellow in the
Fujitsu Research Insitute and he has been conducting
research on Japan's corporate overseas strategy ,
