Seeking Nominations for NCC Council Positions:
The North American Coordinating Council on Japanese Library Resources (the NCC) anticipates several openings for elected position on the NCC Council in 2013. NCC seeks nominations or self-nominations for candidates for the positions of: two librarian positions (Japanese or East Asian Studies) and the position of NCC's Japan Liaison. All positions are those of a full voting member of the NCC Council serving three-year terms. All council members are expected to attend the NCC's yearly working meeting generally held in the fall, to attend NCC's Open Meeting in conjunction with AAS, and to serve as a member and/or co-chair of one or more NCC committee, task force, or working group.
As is required by its by-laws, the NCC seeks to include among Council members faculty and librarians from diverse regions of the country, from institutions of varying size, and from Japanese and East Asian studies programs with a range of strengths and foci. Selection of candidates will, therefore, take into consideration the current representation on the Council in filling these positions. A full list of the current members of the Council is contained on the NCC Web Page at http://www.nccjapan.org/ (under About the NCC).
Formerly elected Council members are ineligible to serve again. A list of past NCC Members by slot can be found in the archive section of the NCC Website. The descriptions of the positions are as follows:
NCC Librarian Members: It is expected that each librarian member will co-chair one or more NCC group.
These may include the Digital Resources Committee, the Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Committee, the Multi-Volume Sets Grants Committee, and Working Groups that focus on Image Use Protocol, Librarian Professional Development, Cooperative Collection Development, Disaster Preparedness, and others that may be formed.
In this round one of the librarians elected will become the new Co-chair for the Interlibrary Loan and Document Committee (ILL/DD), which manages the North American side of the Global ILL Framework, currently with 249 institutional members in the US, Canada and Japan. The ILL/DD Committee is unique among NCC committees in that each institution represented on the Committee has a team made up of a Japanese studies librarian and an ILL librarian, with the Japanese studies librarian member of that team serving as the elected member of the NCC Council. Council Members may also serve as a member or co-chair of other NCC-related groups especially newly formed task forces or working groups that may tackle new problems facing the field.
NCC Japan Liaison: A special and essential member of the Council is the Japan Liaison serving as the official liaison between the NCC and the library community in Japan. The Japan liaison is a full, voting member of the NCC Council who attends its fall meeting and reports there on events in Japan of concern to the NCC; speaks to NCC concerns back in Japan; suggests possible joint efforts between NCC and organizations in Japan; advises on possible sources in Japan for funding support of NCC projects; and speaks for the NCC in Japan when requested to do so by the NCC. There are no specific professional background or credential requirements for the position; essential qualifications are a broad and extensive familiarity with the library and information field in Japan (and increasingly
internationally) and fluency in English to enable the Japan Liaison to fully contribute to discussions and decision-making that takes place at NCC meetings and to comprehensively report on those actions to colleagues in Japan.
Questions and nominations for these positions should be sent to NCC Executive Director Victoria Bestor at vbestor[at]fas.harvard.edu by June 30, 2012.
Self-nominations will be accepted.
Following review by the NCC Executive Committee, eligible candidates will be contacted to determine their willingness to stand for election. Candidates who agree to stand will be asked to submit a short CV and a brief statement expressing their interest in the position and demonstrating the special qualifications they would bring to the NCC. Nominees will be screened by the NCC Executive Committee and elected by an electronic vote of the full NCC Council. Newly elected Council members will work especially closely with incoming NCC Chair Kuniko Yamada McVey of Harvard University, whose term begins January 1, 2013.
