Room 10-301, 3F, Building 10, Sophia University Yotsuya Campus

K-pop (South Korean popular music) has generated enthusiasm across Asia and even in western Europe. In this talk I pose two questions. What are the sources of its success and popularity? What does it say about South Korean culture and society?

John Lie is the C.K. Cho Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. His recent books include Zainichi (Koreans in Japan): Diasporic Nationalism and Postcolonial identity (University of California Press, 2008) and Modern Peoplehood: On Race, Racism, Nationality, Identity, and Ethnicity (paper ed., University of California Press, 2011). His forthcoming books include Violence and The Korean Diaspora.
