Position in Political Science

The Faculty of Liberal Arts, Sophia University, invites applications for an open-rank position in political science, with specialization in the field of international relations (Assistant Professor is a five year tenure-track appointment, while appointments of Associate Professor and Professor are tenured.) The geographic area of study is open, although a focus on either East or Southeast Asia is preferred. The successful applicant will teach a general course on international organizations, plus introductory to upper-level political science courses. Research interests and teaching ability in one or more of the following areas will be considered an asset: human security, transnational/global issues (e.g. climate change, food safety, or gender), regionalism, and international political economy.

The successful candidate is expected to have research accomplishments, a Ph.D. in political science in hand at the time of appointment, while teaching experience is preferred. The language of instruction is English, but competence in Japanese language is desirable. The normal undergraduate teaching load is two courses per semester. Depending on rank, the successful applicant also teaches in the MA and Ph.D. Programs in Global Studies. The appointment will be effective from April 1, 2012, or September 21, 2012.

Sophia University, located in central Tokyo, was founded in 1913 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and is one of Japan?s leading private universities. The Faculty of Liberal Arts (formerly the Faculty of Comparative Culture) offers a comprehensive program in humanities, international business and economics, and social studies. In addition to our degree students, we annually welcome about 200 exchange students from leading universities overseas. We also staff the Graduate Program in Global Studies, which offers degrees in Global Studies, Japanese Studies, and International Business and Development Studies.
