March 12 Free Lecture at Lakeland University Japan: The Discursive Construction of Veganism

From: Roger Grabowski <grabowski@japan.lakeland.edu>

"The Discursive Construction of Veganism" presented by Mario Leto

Thursday, March 12 at 7PM

In his book The Discursive Construction of Veganism: An Ecolinguistics Approach, Mario Leto examines the discursive representations of plant-based diets in podcasts, television programs, online news, documentaries, cookbooks and social media, looking at the visual and linguistic constructions and their potential effect on social cognition and real-world action. He contends that if veganism were represented in a more positive way, more people might be inclined to consider it in the interest of the health of our bodies, minds, communities, and planet. Towards that end, his work catalogues the most common negative representations, the most useful positive representations, and the multi-modal discursive strategies used to identify and resist the former while promoting the latter.

Mario Leto is a lecturer in linguistics and language education in Tokyo, Japan. He is the regional representative for the International Ecolinguistics Association, and the convenor of the Japan Ecolinguistics Association. His work focuses on discourse related to ecology and the natural world. Two other forthcoming publications include a chapter on the representations of insects for a Routledge collection on social semiotics, and an article on the discursive representations of the Baltic Sea in a special issue for the journal Media, War & Conflict.
