This symposium focuses on microaggressions, which have recently attracted attention as forms of discrimination hidden in everyday words and actions, and aim to shed light on their structure and impact in a sociohistorical context. In Japan in particular, some ethnic groups have been burdened with minority status due to the history of colonialism - such as Korean-Japanese minorities, the Ainu people, and the Okinawan and Ryukyu people - as well as those of Buraku heritage who have been subjected to structural discrimination due to other historical causes. Following a keynote speech by Professor Monnica Williams, a clinical psychologist and a leading scholar, researchers and activists will share their experiences and knowledge of microaggressions, as we explore together how best to support minorities and what the expectations are for majority allyship.
 
Dr. Monnica Williams is a licensed psychologist in the U.S. and Canada, professor at the University of Ottawa, and the Canadian government's Canada Research Chair in Mental Health Disparities. She also serves as clinical director of behavioral wellness clinics in Connecticut and Ottawa. Her research focuses on mental health, culture, and psychopathology in Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, and she has published over 200 academic articles on these topics.

本シンポジウムは、日常の言動に潜む差別として近年注目されるマイクロアグレッションを主題とし、その構造と影響を社会的・歴史的文脈から明らかにすることを目的とします。特に日本においては植民地主義の歴史によって生まれたマイノリティ性を担わされてきた民族的集団―在日コリアン、アイヌ民族、沖縄・琉球の人々―や、被差別部落の人々のように植民地主義とは異なる歴史的起源を持つ構造的差別にさらされてきた人々がいます。マイクロアグレッション研究の第一人者である臨床心理学者モニカ・ウィリアムズ教授による基調講演を受けて、日本社会の当事者や研究者がマイクロアグレッションの経験と知見を共有し、マイノリティへの支援およびマジョリティ側の支援者に期待することを共に考えます。
