From the underexplored ins and outs of highly-skilled foreign labor in Japan's corporations to the precarious complexities of the TITP for one of the fastest growing Indonesian labor population, this book talk event will feature two newly published books.

The Future Is Foreign: Women and Immigrants in Corporate Japan (2025) ILR Press/Cornell University Press
Japan is at the forefront of global population decline. "The Future Is Foreign" investigates how elite Japanese firms are responding to this unprecedented challenge. "The Future Is Foreign" sheds new light on the processes that perpetuate inequality in Japanese firms, and in organizations worldwide.
2) Dr. Yusy Widarahesty (Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto)
Dreaming of a Better Life: Journeys of Indonesian Migrant Workers to Japan (2025) Palgrave Macmillan/Springer
"Dreaming of a Better Life" offers a detailed examination of how Indonesian migrants seek a better life through migration, placing their aspirations in Japan to fulfill their dreams. "Dreaming of a Better Life" analyzes the roles of various stakeholders, such as the Indonesian government, the supervising organization, the Indonesian community, former trainees, and the trainees themselves.
