The author, Shoji Morimoto, presents his book, "Rental Person Who Does Nothing," that traces his experience of lending himself out 'as someone who does nothing'--meaning he is available for "just being there" for his client. The experience, says Morimoto, bears witness to significant moments in the lives of those who request his presence. His book was adapted into a Japanese television drama in 2020 and has gathered international attention.

The book is an honest depiction of this service in Japan where approximately 19 million of adults live alone. The percentage is higher among the elderly at 51.6%. The Japanese government has designated loneliness as a national social issue and passed legislation in May, 2023 to combat the social issue.

The book break will feature Morimoto's work and his fascinating observations of a universal issue situated in a Japanese social context. Loneliness is expanding in Japanese society, similar to modern counterparts all over the world. Originally from Hyogo Prefecture, Morimoto completed his graduate studies in Earth and Space Science at Osaka University and worked temporary in publishing before starting his business.

While searching for work that suited him, he decided he was "goodat drifting", he explains for launching his service in 2018. The book captures actual stories - Morimoto is paid to accompany his client to work after a heated argument with his boss, and others.

Morimoto's writings include "Rental Nanmoshinaihito no Nanmoshinakatta Hanashi" (2019, Shobunsha), "<Rental Nanmoshinaihito> to iu Service o Hajimemasu" (2019, Kawadeshoboshinsha).

「何もしない人として自分を貸し出す」－－つまり、依頼人のため「ただそこにいる」だけという体験を綴った『Rental
Person Who Does
Nothing』（2023年、Picador）を、著者の森本祥司が語る。著者曰く、その体験は、他人の人生の重要な場面に立ち会うことでもあった。

2019年に晶文社より出版された『レンタルなんもしない人のなんもしなかった話』は、翌年、「レンタルなんもしない人」(テレビ東京）のタイトルでテレビドラマ化。その後、活動は国際的な注目を集めた。

同書は、約1,900万もの一人暮らしが存在する日本で、「ただそこにいる」だけのサービスの実情を真正面から描く。孤独は、他の先進国と同じく日本社会に広がり、特に高齢者の一人暮らしは、高齢者世帯全体の51.6％を占める。（参考：2023年　国民生活基礎調査の概況）政府は、孤独や孤立を国家的社会問題と位置づけ、2023年5月、この問題に対処するための「孤独・孤立対策推進法」を成立させた（2024年4月施行）。

このBook
Breakでは、著者が手掛けるサービス、日本社会の普遍的な問題に対する自身の興味深い見解を紹介する。

森本は兵庫県出身。大阪大学大学院で理学研究科宇宙地球科学専攻修了後、出版関係の仕事を経て、現職。自分に合う仕事を模索する中で、「ただ、特に何もせずに漫然と過ごすのは得意」と気づき、2018年、このサービスを立ち上げたという。本書は、上司と口論した翌朝の出勤に同行するなど、様々な実際のエピソードを含んでいる。

他の著作には、『〈レンタルなんもしない人〉というサービスをはじめます。:
スペックゼロでお金と仕事と人間関係をめぐって考えたこと』（2019年、河出書房新社）などがある。
