No word encapsulates a country's mainstream lifestyle more than "salaryman" does in Japan. If a Japanese person asks you what you do for a living and you say, "I'm a salaryman," you'll likely get a knowing laugh because they'll instantly visualize the stresses of your life:
- the hungover morning commute on a packed train
- having meetings where the agenda is to decide the date of another meeting
- the kowtowing to your boss, who sits at his desk all day stamping documents with his inkan
It's all part of the salaryman experience. But for a foreigner in this environment, there's also a lot to learn.
At this event, author Michael Thuresson will detail his romp through four ultra-traditional Japanese companies during his decade as an American salaryman in Tokyo. You will hear the painfully funny and insightful truths Thuresson discovered about modern salaryman life--and all it reveals about the U.S.-Japan culture gap. He will also discuss his partnership with a manga artist to illustrate the book and his experiences with self-publishing.
The event will feature a presentation about the making of The Salaryman, as well as a preview of Salarymanhood, Thuresson's upcoming book of illustrated senryu poems. Don't miss this street-level study of Japanese culture that both foreign residents and native Japanese will guzzle down faster than a salaryman does his first beer after work!
Michael Thuresson was a businessman in Los Angeles before he moved to Tokyo and became a salaryman in 2008. He now works at an AI company in Japan and writes books in his free time. The Salaryman was his first book and was initially published in 2019, with The Japan Times calling it "thoroughly entertaining". The second edition of the book was released earlier in 2025.
Doors open at 5:45 pm with a casual "meet the author/cocktail time" from 6:00 pm. Dinner will be served from 6:30 pm and the talk begins at 7:15 pm.
