We are happy to welcome Ambassador Michael Reiterer, professor at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy of the Brussels School of Governance at the Free University of Brussels (VUB) and presently an invited professor at Ritsumeikan University/Kyoto. Against the backdrop of the recent US National Security Strategy, he will discuss economic security, including the prospects of the EU joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Economic security and like-mindedness often go together without analyzing costs and risks, which allows populists to advocate simple solutions. While there are valid strategic and security reasons to re-organize supply chains, there is a need to find the right policy mix. Otherwise, industrial policy and protectionism may go hand-in-hand in a problematic way, and security induced measures may create unnecessary costs and lead to subsidy wars on top of trade wars. Related to this issue, by joining the CPTPP, the EU could enhance its economic security in ways that promote a liberal economic regime.

Dr. Michael Reiterer is Professor for International Security, Diplomacy and Strategy, Brussels School of Governance; Adjunct Professor University of Innsbruck (habilitation 2005, PhD equivalent), Webster University/Vienna, LUISS/Rome, Danube University/Krems; Guest professor Ritsumeikan University/Kyoto, Asia Pacific University/Beppu, Kobe and Keio University/Tokyo. Associate Fellow - Global Fellowship Initiative, Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP), Senior Advisor - Centre for Asia Pacific Strategy (CAPS), Washington DC; Austria Institute for Europa and Security Policy, Vienna; Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies.
