Sophia University Institute of Comparative Culture, Fordham University, Abe/SSRC project "Consent in Sexual Violence: Cross-Cultural Perspectives in Japan and the US presents a symposium:

This is a two-day event. The first day, July 5th, will be in-person, with presentations conducted in English (no registration required).

Thanks to the #MeToo Movement and the Flower Demonstration in Japan, sexual violence has gained more public attention recently in the country. However, due to the stigmatisation and victim-blaming culture, many voices are still silenced. NHK (Japanʼs broadcasting company equivalent to the BBC) conducted the first large-scale online survey on sexual violence, with Professor Emerita Machiko Osawa of Japan Women's University contributing to the questionnaire design and analysis.  Within the parameters of this huge and rich survey of more than 38,000 responses, our group with Professor Osawa is the first to gain access to this data to present on the intersection of sexual violence and gender inequality in Japan, with a particular focus on public spaces, embodied vulnerabilities, and evolving dating cultures. Drawing from the 2023 revision of Japanʼs Penal Code, this symposium analysed the lived experiences of survivors through combined quantitative and qualitative approaches. These papers interweave Japanʼs politico-eco- nomic structure, rape and dating culture, and spatial formations that reinforce the systematic vulnerability of particular groups, undermine the credibility of sexual survivorsʼ claims, and challenge taken-for-granted assumptions of consent and safety. This event is open to the public to encourage people to engage in a dialogue on the issue of consent.

#MeToo運動や日本でのフラワーデモの影響により、性暴力の問題は近年、日本国内でも注目を集めるようになりました。しかし、依然としてスティグマや被害者非難の文化が根強く、多くの声が抑圧されています。このような状況の中、NHKが初の大規模な性暴力に関するwebアンケート調査を実施し、日本女子大学大沢真知子名誉教授が質問票作成・分析として協力しました。　調査には38,000件以上の回答が寄せられました。私たちの研究グループは、この貴重な調査データから日本における性暴力とジェンダー不平等の交差点について、大沢教授と共に共同研究を進め、特に公共空間における身体的脆弱性や変化しつつある恋愛文化に焦点を当てて発表を行います。本シンポジウムでは、2023年に改正された刑法の枠組みを踏まえ、量的・質的アプローチを組み合わせて被害者の実体験を分析します。各発表は、日本の政治経済構造、レイプや恋愛文化、そして特定の集団の脆弱性を体系的に強化する空間構造に焦点を当て、被害者の声の信頼性が損なわれやすい現状や、「同意」や「安全性」といった当たり前とされている概念への疑問を提起します。

本イベントは一般公開されており、「同意」というテーマについて多くの方と対話を深める機会となることを目指しています。
