June 19 Free Lecture at Lakeland University: Japanese Graphic Design History

From: Roger Grabowski <grabowski@japan.lakeland.edu>
Date: 2025/06/06

"Fracture: Japanese Graphic Design 1875-1975 (or The Making of a Book about Japanese Design History in 8 Acts)", presented by Ian Lynam

Designer, educator and critic Ian Lynam will talk about the making of his latest book Fracture, the seminal book on Japanese Graphic Design History. Prior to this book, there has not been an inclusive and easy-to-read history book about Japanese graphic design, how it came to be, and why it looks the way that it does. Ian will take us on a journey spanning the 15 years that it took him to assemble Fracture, regarded as a "a new milestone in design history".

Ian Lynam works at the intersection of graphic design, design education and design research. He is faculty at Temple University Japan. He operates the Tokyo design studio Ian Lynam Design, working across identity, typography, and interior design. Ian writes for IDEA (JP), Modes of Criticism (PT/UK), Slanted (DE) and has published a number of books about design, including Fracture: Japanese Graphic Design 1875-1975.
