President Trump turning on the Ukraine was a completely unexpected turn in U.S. foreign policy. It put Japan on what some have called a quiet, frantic, and others a red alert. We will discuss how Japan is responding to the tectonic shifts in the global role of the U.S.

Yuji Idomoto is a Postdoctoral Scholar at the School of Global Policy and Strategy, University of California San Diego. His research focuses on International Relations theory, East Asian security, and Japan's defense policy. His latest paper, "The Bargaining Theory of War and North Korea," is forthcoming in the Asian Journal of Peacebuilding. Before entering academia, he served nine years as a government official at the Japanese Ministry of Defense and the Cabinet Office.
 
Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at UC San Diego's School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) and the director of the Japan Forum for Innovation and Technology (JFIT). Her research focuses on Japanese business strategies and management; employment practices and corporate culture; financial markets; manufacturing; and innovation. Her 2020 book, "The Business Reinvention of Japan: How to Make Sense of the New Japan" (Stanford University Press), won the 2021 Masayoshi Ohira Memorial Prize and has been translated into Japanese as 再興 THE KAISHA: 日本のビジ ネス・リインベンション (Nikkei, 2022). Her most recent book, シン日本の経営：悲観バイアスを排す ("Japan Re-emerges"), was published in March 2024 in Japanese.
