East Asian and Pacific Histories from the Perspective of the Unequal Treaties

Marco Tinello

Associate Professor

Department of Cross-Cultural Studies, Kanagawa University

Wednesday, 18 December 2024 (open to the public; in person only)
15:30-17:00
Room 6019
Kanagawa University, Minatomirai Campus
Yokohama

Abstract

The compact/treaty that the Ryukyu Kingdom signed with the US government in 1854 was crucial for understanding cooperation between the US and Japanese governments when the latter annexed the Ryukyu Islands in 1879 (an episode known as the Ryukyu shobun). This presentation explores how Japan-US negotiations over treaty rights facilitated Japan's ambitions in the Ryukyus, the Ogasawara Islands, and Korea, as well as their confrontation when the US annexed the Kingdom of Hawai'i and when Japan obtained a Class C Mandate on the South Pacific Islands. By the early twentieth century, these two powers had mutually accepted each other's territorial acquisitions and, in so doing, built their own empires and brought stability to East Asia and the Pacific. Besides, the theater for a potential war between the two empires in the Pacific had also been assembled. By reviewing the informal agreement between Japan and the US during the annexation of the Ryukyus, we can better appreciate how the Ryukyu shobun set the stage for later events.
