Imagine a tower-like dwelling made of tiny, triangular spaces stacked one above another. Or a house with eighteen rooms, each barely bigger than the furniture it holds. Or a home for a family of four built upward but burrowed into the ground. Since the end of World War II, Japanese architects have produced some of the most exceptional and innovative homes in the world. These homes are the subject of The Japanese House Since 1945, the latest book authored by the architect Naomi Pollock.

Based on interviews with architects and their clients, disciples and family members, this book uses text and photos, many seldom seen, to present an array of the most compelling examples built over the past eight decades. The book focuses on the people who turned these important works of architecture into homes but also delves into key developments in form, materials and architectural expression.

Quoting from Tadao Ando's Foreword: "This book examining Japanese residential architecture in detail from 1945 onwards can be said to be a realistic history of post-war Japanese society, as seen through the filter of architectural design... The chain of creativity that began in the architectural world of post-war Japan remains unbroken--this book conveys that sense of hope."

Naomi Pollock is an American architect and author who lived in Tokyo for thirty years. She writes about design and architecture in Japan. In addition to her articles, which have appeared in publications such as Dwell, Nikkei Asian Review, Wallpaper* and Architectural Record, for whom she is a Contributing Editor, Pollock has produced ten books, including Japanese Design Since 1945: A Complete Sourcebook and NUNO: Visionary Japanese Textiles, which she edited.

Pollock holds master's degrees in architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the University of Tokyo's School of Engineering. In recognition of her contributions as a journalist and critic, Pollock was invited into the College of Fellows of The American Institute of
Architects in 2018.
