Japan Zoominar @ UC San Diego: "The Makanai: The Magical Mystery Tour of Maiko Foods on Netflix" with Jan Bardsley

Wed, Sept 258:00-9:00 am JST (Tue, Sept 24, 4:00-5:00 pm Pacific)
Kore-eda Hirokazu's 2023 Netflix series, "The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House," enchants viewers with the magic of home cooking, the allure of Kyoto's hidden alleys and sweet treats, and the pure delight of girls' friendships. But what insights does it provide about the lives of apprentice geishas (maiko)? How does knowledge of the maikos' work, and their status as Kyoto's quintessential girls, help us follow the humor woven into "The Makanai"?

Jan Bardsley, author of "Maiko Masquerade: Crafting Geisha Girlhood in Japan," delves into these questions, exploring both the Netflix series and the long-running manga that inspired it.
