"Contentious Alliance: American Democrats and Organized Labor"
Michael Kazin, CPAS Seminar, 18:00-20:00JST, Friday, May 24th, 2024
Dear SSJ members,
We cordially invite you to a seminar talk given by Michael Kazin at the Center for Pacific and American Studies (CPAS), the University of Tokyo.
Professor Michael Kazin of Georgetown University is a historian of American politics and social movements in the 19th and 20th centuries. What It Took to Win: A History of the Democratic Party (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2022) is his most recent book, alongside numerous other works he has published. His talk at the CPAS Seminar will shed light on the history of the contentious alliance between the Democratic Party and the labor unions: the tensions have risen from the fact that while the Party and the union leaders have tried to work together during election times, American workers have found other identities more important than their class interests.
Professor Hiroshi Okayama of Keio University will provide comments on the talk before we open the session to the floor for Q&A.
Event date and time: 18:00-20:00JST, Friday, May 24th, 2024
