Join the public face and voice of current Japanese policy in this conversation with Noriyuki Shikata, who currently serves as Cabinet Secretary for Public Affairs for Prime Minister Kishida's administration. We will cover topics ranging from Japan's defense and foreign policy, including the "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" and support for Ukraine, all the way to PM Kishida's concept of "New Form of Capitalism" and Japan's vision of a "green transformation".

Noriyuki "Nori" SHIKATA was appointed as Cabinet Secretary for Public Affairs under Prime Minister Fumio KISHIDA in October 2021.

Most recently, he was Assistant Minister/Director General, Economic Affairs Bureau of Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) (2020-21).

His other prior positions include: Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan in China (2017-19); Deputy Director General, Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau, MOFA (2016-17); Political Minister, Embassy of Japan in the U.K.(2012-14); Director of Global Communications, Prime Minister's Office (2010-12), Director of respectively, Economic Treaties, Second North America (Japan-U.S. economic issues), International Press, and Status of U.S. Forces Agreement Divisions.

He has also been a Visiting Professor at Kyoto University's Graduate School of Law/Public Policy (Japan's diplomacy), and Associate, Program on U.S.-Japan Relations, Harvard University. He holds a B.A. in Law from Kyoto University and Master of Public Policy (MPP) from Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at the University of California, San Diego, School of Global Policy and Strategy. Her research focuses on Japan's changing business strategies, innovation, and corporate culture change. Books include "The Business Reinvention of Japan" (2020; in Japanese 「再興 THE KAISHA: 日本のビジ ネス・リインベンション」and  「シン日本の経営:悲観バイアスを排す」(2024, in Japanese only). She holds a PhD in Japan Studies and Economics from Marburg University, Germany, and has been invited to visiting professor and scholar positions in the U.S. and Japan, including at Hitotsubashi University and the research institutes of various private and government think tanks. All told, Professor Schaede has spent over nine years of research in Tokyo. She is a member of the advisory board of IGPI, Inc. and a research fellow and supporter of two startup incubators in Japan.
