Early Career Researchers Workshop on Economic Statecraft and International Security

From: N. Uras Demir <demirn@uci.edu>
Date: 2024/03/17

Dear SSJ-Forum Members,

On Friday 29 March we will hold a small, in-person, informal workshop aimed at early career researchers who study issues at the intersection of international political economy and international security.

The workshop is part of an ongoing series of small events designed to provide a platform for presenting research findings, soliciting feedback on working papers, dissertation chapters, or other works in progress, and beginning to foster a community among the growing number of junior international relations scholars in Japan doing research on these issues.

The workshop will be held in the Second Floor Conference Hall (L2), Building 4, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo (Komaba Campus) from 9am to 12pm on March 29 (Friday)

The workshop will feature two panels. For each panel, three speakers will be given up to 15 minutes each to present their research and the specific issues they wish for feedback on, followed by approximately 30 minutes of open Q&A with the audience.

Panel One:

Ayaka Hiraki (PhD Candidate, Keio University)

Paul Nadeau (Adjunct Assistant Professor, Temple University Japan)

  1. Uras Demir (PhD Candidate, University of California, Irvine; JSPS Predoctoral Research Fellow, University of Tokyo)

Panel Two:

Yuma Osaki (Assistant Professor, Doushisha University)

Hideyuki Miura (Assistant Professor, Kyorin University)

Victor A. Ferguson (JSPS Postdoctoral Research Fellow, University of Tokyo)

We currently expect the attendance of a good mix of graduate students and early-mid career researchers. In addition to learning about the research others are currently engaged in, we hope the event will serve as an opportunity for casual networking and developing a small community of IR researchers based in different institutions in Japan who are interested in the nexus of economic interdependence and international security.

If you are interested in attending the workshop as an audience member, or would be interested in presenting your own research at a future workshop, please write to us (demirn@iss.u-tokyo.ac.jp or victorferguson@g.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp) and we will add you to our Early Career Researchers of Economic Statecraft and International Security in Japan mailing list.

We look forward to seeing everyone in Komaba.

Sincerely,

  1. Uras Demir
