Special Issue Workshop on the Role of Firms in Geoeconomics at the University of Tokyo

Date: 2024/02/15
Dear SSJ-Forum Members,
Law & Geoeconomics (L&G) is a new double-blind peer reviewed journal that seeks to provide a platform for an emerging multidisciplinary scholarly community to rigorously analyze and debate the relationships between law, commerce, power, and security in world politics. Our Editorial Board consists of distinguished scholars drawn widely from across the humanities and social sciences, and our remit is similarly pluralist, welcoming contributions of all theoretical and methodological approaches from scholars working in or across diverse disciplines including political science, law, economics, history, geography, and sociology.
The journal is commencing work in early 2024. In addition to regular issues, beginning in 2025 we intend to publish an annual special issue that will be developed through an in-person workshop in the preceding year.
We are pleased to invite proposals for papers to be presented at the inaugural special issue workshop, to be held at the University of Tokyo in June 2024.
Special Issue Theme and Call for Papers
The theme for the inaugural special issue is tentatively titled States, Firms and Geoeconomic Agency: The Role of Private Business in Contemporary Economic Statecraft and Security.
Further details on the theme are contained in the attached call for papers. Given the central place of Japan in current debates surrounding this theme, the editors strongly encourage proposals that have an empirical focus on state-firm relations in Japan.
The deadline for paper proposals (tentative title and extended abstracts up to 500 words, in which authors specify their motivating research question, argument, and proposed empirical and/or theoretical contributions) is Friday 1 March.
Proposals should be emailed to: editorialoffice@lawandgeoeconomics.org
The Workshop
To develop coherence across the papers and ensure that the issue will add up to more than the sum of its individual parts, the editors will host a 1.5-day workshop at the University of Tokyo's Komaba Campus over 13-14 June 2024, where contributing authors will present initial versions of their work and receive feedback from other authors and invited discussants.
Thanks to our funders, there is funding available to cover travel, accommodation, and meals. For further details on the workshop, special issue timeline, and funding opportunities, please see the attached call for papers.
Should you require any further information, please write to me (victorferguson@g.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp), J. Hillebrand Pohl (jhpohl@geoeconomics.fi), or the editorial office directly (editorialoffice@lawandgeoeconomics.org).
We look forward to seeing you in Tokyo.
Sincerely,
Victor Ferguson (on behalf of the L&G Editorial Board)
