The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is Japan's premier and fast-rising science and technology university. Professor Peter Gruss is a special advisor for Innovation and president emeritus of OIST, and also the former president of the Max Planck Society in Germany. He will share his deep insights into how institutions such as OIST can contribute to global learning as well as research excellence in Japan.

Peter Gruss is an internationally renowned researcher in gene regulation and embryonic development who served as the president of the Max Planck Society in Germany from 2002-2014. Previously, Gruss was director of the Department of Molecular Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen for 16 years.

Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the Director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.
