Japan has long been a center for excellence in life science, and many innovative therapeutic modalities were invented there. A strong uptick in entrepreneurship is now adding further momentum to this trend, including university-based startups. Takashi Kiyoizumi, MD, PhD, MBA, is a San Diego-based angel investor and life science business veteran. He will discuss the ongoing transformation and current life sciences startup activity in Japan.

Takashi Kiyoizumi, MD, PhD, MBA is the executive manager of JFIT at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy, and managing director of Kiyoizumi Advisory LLC. Kiyoizumi is a 40-year veteran in the life science field with senior managerial and board positions including CEOs of MediciNova, Inc. (MNOV: NASDAQ) and Tanabe Research Laboratories USA in San Diego. He is also a member of NuFund Venture Group, the largest angel investor group in the U.S. He received MD and PhD from Keio University School of Medicine, and an MBA from Sloan School of Management of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
 
Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at GPS, UC San Diego, and the Director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.
