Description Department/ Unit: Department of Japanese Studies
The Department of Japanese Studies in the Faculty of Arts at The Chinese University of Hong Kong invites applications for a full-time, tenure-eligible position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Japanese Studies with an expected start date of August 2024. The Department is a dynamic center for research and teaching in Japanese Studies and serves as a hub for regional and global networking in the field. Faculty members engage in research supported by competitive grants and publish in top-tier international venues. The Department values diverse disciplinary perspectives including anthropology, history, literary studies, media studies, linguistics and popular culture studies. Faculty members excel in transnational and comparative research that situates Japan in regional and global perspective. The Department is committed to teaching as a core mission and provides training in Japanese studies at undergraduate, MA, MPhil and PhD levels.
We are particularly interested in applicants whose research focuses on an aspect of Japanese material or intellectual culture or the workings of society, and who is thus clearly a Japan expert, but who, in his/her intellectual work and publications, is also able to situate this focused interest in the context of the larger society, and able to analyze data comparatively and transnationally.
The successful candidate will have achieved or possess the strong potential to achieve: (i) internationally recognized research records in both publications and grant applications; (ii) experiences in administration and serving the academic community; (iii) rich experiences in teaching and positive teaching evaluations; (iv) leadership skills and collegial spirit; (v) native or near-native fluency in English and Japanese.
Duties include: (a) teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; (b) obtaining competitive research grants and conducting academic research; (c) publishing world-class academic research in related fields; (d) recruiting and retaining outstanding research postgraduate students; (e) mentoring students; (f) committee work and other administrative duties that promote a diverse and inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students. Appointment will normally be made on contract basis for up to three years initially commencing August 2024, which, subject to performance and mutual agreement, may lead to longer-term appointment or substantiation later. Salary will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The University offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package, including medical care, contract-end gratuity for an appointment of two years or longer and housing benefits for eligible appointees. Extensive research funding is available on a competitive basis. The terms mentioned herein are for reference only and are subject to revision by the University.
