From: Rodney Smith <rodney.smith@sydney.edu.au>
Date: 2023/11/28

The Australian Society 17th Regional Research Meeting (Kanto Regular Meeting) will hold its next seminar (in English):

"The Voice Referendum, Equality and Australian National Identity"

 Professor Rodney Smith

(Visiting Professor of Australian Studies, University of Tokyo)

This talk will discuss the unsuccessful attempt to amend the Australian constitution via referendum on October 14 2023.  The proposed amendment was designed to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples via a representative body ('the Voice') that would have made submissions to the Australian Parliament and Executive on proposed laws and policies.  The talk will explore the various ways in which supporters and opponents of the Voice drew on ideas about equality to make their cases and what these uses of equality suggest about Australian national identity.

Date, Time: 16 December 2023 (Saturday), 14:00-16:00

You are all cordially invited to this event.
