Assistant Professor - Modern and Contemporary Japanese literary and cultural studies



The Department of World Languages and Cultures at North Carolina State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Modern and Contemporary Japanese literary and cultural studies. We seek candidates with research and teaching expertise in Japanese literature and cultural studies.


The strongest candidates also will have demonstrated research and teaching interest in Japanese literature, cinema, cultural studies or related studies with an interdisciplinary and/or comparative approach. Teaching responsibilities include a combination of Japanese language courses, taught primarily in Japanese, and Japanese Studies courses, taught primarily in English, related to the candidate's area(s) of expertise, such as literature and cultural studies.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Teach in-person courses in the Japanese section

  • Maintain an active research agenda and publication schedule commensurate with NC State's status as an Rl Research University

  • Advise undergraduate major and minor students

  • Provide service and leadership to the program area, department, college, and university

  • Contribute to program design, development, and evaluation

  • Collaborate with faculty within the department, college, and across the university

The search committee will start reviewing applications on November 20, 2023 until the position is filled.


Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a PhD by the time of appointment in Japanese, Asian Studies, Comparative Literature, or related fields

  • The ability to carry out an original research agenda in Japanese cultural studies, cinema or literature

  • Strong research and publication skills, and research productivity

  • Strong commitment to excellence in teaching

  • Near-native fluency in both Japanese and English

  • Excellent communication, social skills and teamwork

Preferred Requirements:

  • Teaching experience at the university level and demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence
