Overview

Military posture and policy continues to develop and change quickly in the Indo-Pacific. Japan, a state which has long attempted to minimize its post-war military activity, has enacted several major policy and posture changes recently which seem to indicate this era is definitively over. These include Japan's significant defense budget increases, unprecedented in the twenty-first century, and its dedication to acquiring new capabilities which appear will bring Japan's military capabilities more in line with those commonly found within its allies and NATO countries. Similarly, defense exports are being given a re-examination, with unknown consequences for the region and Tokyo's involvement in future conflicts. Finally, the triumph of "minilateral" diplomacy, particularly in the Quad and the US-Japan-Republic of Korea relationships, stand to reshape Indo-Pacific diplomacy for the foreseeable future. After taking a closer look at the issues, these changes reveal the US-Japan Alliance will continue to drive regional power and the subsequent military responses to it.
