Japan Zoominar @ UC San Diego: "Silver Democracy: How Japan's Aging Politicians Affect Policy Choices" with Charles T. McClean

Wed, Oct. 11, 8:00-9:00 am JST (Tue, Oct. 10, 4:00-5:00 pm Pacific)

Old people are considerably overrepresented in Japan's political institutions, and the research question here is how that affects decision-making and policy choices. What are the consequences of the average age of politicians for the structuring of welfare policies, fiscal policies, infrastructures, or others? Join Charles McClean to discuss why young politicians are so rare in Japan, whether Japanese voters would like to see this corrected, and how the underrepresentation of young politicians significantly affects Japan's democracy.
