The Tsuda University Institute for Research in Language and Culture Project "Possibilities and Issues of Japan Studies in English" invites you to a screening and discussion with the director of "The Ones Left Behind: The Plight of Single Mothers in Japan".

Told through the eyes of battle-hardened single mothers, researchers, and business leaders, The Ones Left Behind: The Plight of Single Mothers in Japan depicts the hardships that single mothers face in a country that just a few decades ago experienced unprecedented economic growth. Drawing on the experiences of women struggling day-to-day to raise their children with little government support, the film considers the poverty often hiding beneath the surface of contemporary Japan, reveals its causes, and encourages viewers to think about social inequality, welfare, and community in Japan today.
