Japan Zoominar @ UC San Diego: "Japan and the Geo-Dynamics of the Indo-Pacific" with SONE Kenko, Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles

Wed, May 31, 8:00-9:00 am JST (Tue, May 30, 4:00-5:00 pm Pacific)
Japan has long played a central role in the Indo-Pacific security architecture, both through its alliance with the United States and through its own political, economic and security initiatives in Northeast and Southeast Asia. In the last decade, these initiatives have become more forward-looking, encompassing Japan's own vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific (FOIP). Japan has also played an increasingly important role in addressing problems in the global commons, from development to climate change and global public health. Join Consul General Kenko Sone for a discussion of the economic, political, and security challenges that lie ahead.

Mr. SONE Kenko became Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles in September of 2022, following an assignment as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Assistant Minister and Director-General for Cultural Affairs. Since 1989, Sone's diplomatic career has taken him to Geneva, New Delhi, and now three locations in the United States (beginning with Wesleyan University in Connecticut). Serving multiple times in the sphere of economic affairs - in the context of North America, the OECD, the international economy, and specifically of the U.S. and India, as well as Ambassador in charge of Economic Diplomacy - SONE has also worked as Deputy Cabinet Secretary for Public Affairs, Director of Global Communications in the Prime Minister's Office, and Deputy Director-General for Asian and Oceanian affairs.

Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy and the director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.
