Description:
From quantum technologies and artificial intelligence to biotechnology and advanced materials, critical and emerging technologies are poised to play an outsized role in defining the geopolitical landscape of the 22st century as they rapidly transform societies, economies, and national security. The United States and Japan are both global leaders in many of these technologies and have a long history of science and technology cooperation rooted in shared democratic values and an alliance that is the cornerstone of peace, stability, and freedom in the Indo-Pacific region.
At the same time, against the backdrop of accelerating technological change and an increasingly fraught international security environment, there is an urgent demand for the United States and Japan--the world's two largest advanced industrial democracies--to further strengthen their respective competitive advantage in key technologies and to deepen bilateral and multilateral technology cooperation with like-minded partners. To this end, Washington and Tokyo are each developing new strategies and institutions, including the recently established Office of the Special Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technology at the U.S. Department of State.
To discuss these trends, GRIPS is pleased to host Dr. Seth Center, Deputy Envoy for Critical and Emerging Technologies at the U.S. Department of State and Dr. Kay Shimizu, Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh, for an in-depth conversation on critical and emerging technologies and opportunities for further strengthening U.S.-Japan cooperation.
