Japan Zoominar @ UC San Diego: "Tales from Sailing Japan's Distant Coast Lines: History, Culture, and Reinvention" with Lowell Sheppard
Wed, Apr 19, 8:00-9:00 am JST (Tue, Apr 18, 4:00-5:00 pm Pacific)
Lowell Sheppard has been working in and writing about Japan for over two decades. His first adventure in Japan was riding his bicycle 3,000 km from Kyushu to Hokkaido during the cherry blossom season. His subsequent book with a UK Publisher, was released in both English and Japanese. A few years later, he rode the length of the Pacific Coastline in search of Tsunami stones - something he first learned about while working in Tohoku in the months following the Triple Disaster of March 2011. Lowell is the founder of Never Too Late Academy, a Japanese NGO, and has helped effect change in Japan's non-profit sector. Now he is sailing full-time around Japan and followed at times by the History Channel for new TV series called "Dare to Dream". His latest book by the same title will be published by LID in London.
Lowell Sheppard is a Japan-based author, TV host, social entrepreneur, digital nomad, and seasoned adventurer. Over twenty years ago, he cycled the length of Japan during Cherry Blossom Season. For the past two years, he has been sailing the Japanese Coast Line, stopping in remote harbors. He has endured storms, volcano outbreaks, and once his boat nearly sunk.
Ulrike Schaede is Professor of Japanese Business at the UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy and the director of JFIT. Her research focuses on Japan's changing corporate strategies, including business culture, change management, and business organization. Her 2020 book "The Business Reinvention of Japan" analyzes how Japanese companies are responding to the rise of China and the changing global competition.
