In the relevant specialist literature on German film history, one searches in vain for the name of the Jewish director Gertrud Wolffsohn, who, after fleeing the Nazis in Shanghai, made a documentary about the Jews who emigrated to Shanghai with the support of the China Film Company managed by Kawakita Nagamasa. This film is at best mentioned as a footnote in German-language film historiography and in Jewish exile research. Although it is occasionally mentioned in Japanese sources on the history of the China Film Company, from them one learns little more about the director than her name and little concrete information about the film, which was planned as a fundraising project for Jewish refugee aid. According to sources, the production had to be stopped by order of the Japanese military, which is why the film is considered unfinished and lost. However, a critical examination of the previously known Japanese sources as well as previously unpublished new sources call the above account into question.
In this lecture, held in German, Roland Domenig (Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo) will first briefly introduce the director of the film, Gertrud Wolffsohn, and its producer Kawakita Nagamasa, explain how the film came about and its content, and finally makes a reassessment of the supposedly unfinished film.

This will be a hybrid event, both live at the Campus of the University of Vienna and online via Zoom. Live participation is available for 50 people.
