Open Calls for Tenure Track and Fixed-Term Professors in International Relations at APU

Job Title: Tenure Track Associate Professor or Assistant Professor in International Relations 

Positions: 1

Subjects and Duties 

  • The candidate will teach Liberal Arts subjects such as "Introduction to Comparative Politics 
    (J)", "Introduction to International Relations (J)", "Introduction to Political Science (J/E)", 
    and undergraduate major subjects such as "International Political Economy (J)", "Development 
    Policy (J)", "International Conflict Resolution (J)", "History of International Politics (J)", 
    "International Law (J)", "Ethnicity and Nation State (J)", "International Relations Theory 
    (J)", "Identity and Politics (E)", "Violence and Terrorism (J/E)", "Political Theory (J/E)", 
    "Politics of Development (J/E)", "Human Rights (E)", and "Geo-Politics and Post Cold 
    War Conflicts (E)". 
  • Candidate is required to be able to teach in both Japanese and English.  
  • Other subjects to teach will be decided upon consultation with the successful candidate and in consideration to their professional experience, research fields, interests, and educational needs of the university. 
  • The successful candidate may also be asked to teach graduate school subjects.  
Duties include conducting research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, supervising students' research and projects, and providing service to the college.

  • Ability to teach lectures in Japanese is not required for this full professor position, but viewed favorably. 
  • Duties include conducting research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, supervising students' research and projects, and providing service to the college.  

    At APU, undergraduate subjects are offered in both English and Japanese, and graduate subjects are offered entirely in English. Official business on campus is conducted in either English or Japanese. However, the successful candidate is highly encouraged to achieve functional fluency in Japanese during the initial period of appointment.  

    Application Requirements 

    The candidate must meet Requirement (1) or (2) as well as Requirement (3), (4), and (5) below. 

    (1) Possesses a doctoral degree (or is scheduled to obtain one within one year of appointment) and have peer-reviewed academic publications.  

    (2) Possesses a master's degree and at least five years of practical experience in a company, government agency, or international organization, etc., and has experience in publishing books and articles in the field of political science or closely related fields.   

    (3) Be fluent in the specified language(s) of instruction for each position  

    (4) Show the ability and willingness to work in a culturally and academically diverse school. 

    (5) Show commitment to assurance of learning and meeting the standards for accreditations.
