Abstract: Globalization and precarity manifest in diverse forms for high-income countries (HICs) and low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). Global precarity talks among HICs focus on addressing colonial history, while LMICs focus on political-economic disparity. Global issues regarding social and economic precarity, insecurity, and dependency have been a part of the international landscape as long as the consolidation of capitalism and state systems. However, the current COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbates the global precarity and disparity issues. Oxfam, an international movement fighting inequality, reported that the death toll in LMICs has been four times larger than HICs. The global COVID-19 cases have started to lower since 2020, but the pathways to healing and recovery are diverse. Thus, this workshop aims for the following purposes: (1) to explore the precarious issues confronting LMICs and their pathway to recovery and (2) to explore the spiritual and socio-economic precarity issues facing HICs and their pathways to healing. Overall, the expected results of the symposium are for participants to learn the diverse and globalizing forms of precarity and the pathways to healing and recovery. The workshop will highlight multiple solutions that may be implemented in countries with similar economic and cultural backgrounds.

About the Graduate School of Global Studies Symposium and Workshop Series Organized by Graduate Students and Junior Scholars

As part of our training and education, the Graduate School of Global Studies offers graduate students and junior scholars the opportunity to organize symposia and workshops. The symposia and workshops are open to the public and include the participation of more than one researcher from outside Sophia. The presentations, comments, and discussions in the symposia and workshops will advance the research and intellectual networks of participating students.

Those wishing to organize a workshop submit proposals. The best proposal among those selected will be nurtured as an international symposium that includes guest speakers from Japan or abroad. Presented papers may be subsequently published in the Journal of Area-Based Global Studies, AGLOS based in the Graduate School of Global Studies, Sophia University.
